First, thanks for posting and keeping up with the goings on — hard to make it to all of these in person.

In response to: “Make note: This was fundamentally a request for a waiver, and the vote did not pass by the 4/5 required to exceed the cap.” It’s my understanding that the 4/5 majority is required to actually request that the town exceed the levy cap. It sounds to me like the council is just looking to have all of the information available to them prior to the FTM, so they can make an informed decision on the budget. A letter of inquiry can under no circumstances be considered a request to raise the cap — it is simply a request for information. I believe several of the council members tried to communicate this, but Mr. Caron only seems to hear what Mr. Caron wants to hear. I’d sure like us to go into the FTM fully informed.

Brian Medeiros repeatedly says that he supports staying under the cap. If he means it, then his attacks against TCC make no sense. Maybe Brian Medeiros is anti-education and anti-government since he would come in under the cap too?

Justin,
The School Committee has requested an additional $2,000,000 in local taxpayer contribution (about 10% increase which is against state law). The Town Administrator has asked for additional spending of $900,000. Revenues are down and the town expects to lose $1.4M in state aid. Each 1% in property tax increase yields about $300,000 so a 4.5% tax increase is about $1,350,000, which is coincidentally about the amount of lost state aid on the town side. Therefore, the Budget Committee would have to level fund both the school and municipal budget and still go to the cap. Unless you want the Budget Committee to exceed the cap, what would you expect the Committee to have done?

I don’t need a chart to know why my tax bill has gone up three to four hundred dollars every year. It’s time to shake the pork out of these budgets

I THINK THE BUDGET COMMITEE DID A BANG UP JOB LAST NIGHT !!!!KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. I BELIEVE THAT IF IN FACT YOU CAN GET TO THE CAP THIS YEAR, OR SLIGHTLY BELOW, IT WOULD BE A VICTORY. HOWEVER, IF WE DON’T ALL SHOW UP TO THE FTM, IT COULD ALL BE UNDONE. SO EVERYBODY NEEDS TO BE THERE THIS YEAR!!!!!!

I have watched the legal shananagines that have taken place in this town for years. The previous councils used there little tricks to make the town think they are getting a good deal. This is more concise that other online sources for local issues and again having the source documents lets people “decide for themselves.”
